Keeping a Stocked Larder

Christmas is here and so too are the weather reports of our first major winter storm on the way! They're currently predicting 6 to 10 inches, but last time we had one along these lines, we ended up with four feet! More predictable than the weather in this type of situation, are the long lines and the empty shelves at the grocery store. I often hear comments about people wanting milk, bread, eggs, toilet paper, paper towels, etc. Along those lines, I have seen several posts on a networking site called "CafeMom" asking what sorts of things do you like to keep handy in the event of a storm. Having answered this post a number of times now, and in much the same way, I thought I'd post my basic answers here as well; for some of the more obscure items, I'll post what I might use it to make...

  • powdered milk
  • ground flax seed or apple sauce (both are a good egg replacers for things like pancakes, baked goods, etc.)
  • rice
  • dried or canned beans
  • canned tomatoes
  • slow-cook oatmeal
  • dried fruit (to put in the oatmeal)
  • sugar
  • coffee (though not a "necessity," it is one that we try to keep around - barring a cup of joe, we do keep tea around too)
  • noodles (usually angel hair pasta in our house, but perhaps shells or macaroni)
  • mixed nuts
  • bread flour
  • peanut butter
In the freezer we might keep frozen fruit or vegetables, frozen veggie-sausage, a block of cheese, corn tortillas and yeast.

If I keep enough of these items on hand, I can easily make three meals a day for three or four days without worrying about the store. There may not be a lot of variety or snack-foods in there, but we will still eat until any storm blows over!

I'm curious though on what others keep around for unforeseen events? What is my list missing?

  1. Coffee--not a necessity?! WHAT? WHAT do you MEAN coffee is NOT a necessity!? Does your husband know you think that?!

  2. Probably not - he would also think wine a necessity, but it is not on my "required-no-matter-how-little-grocery-money-you-have" list. Didn't think to mention oil - preferably olive, but butter works too if I'm out of oil... We were out of coffee AND Diet Coke not long ago, when he was working so hard on his final paper. He had to make due with tea until I could get out to the store. I'm not sure, but he might have very nearly died from the experience!

I look forward to hearing your thoughts!
