Precious Moments

What is it...

that is so soothing about laying your head on someone's chest, hearing the air whoosh in and out of their lungs, and the steady thump-thump of a strong heart? Is it a throwback to when our mothers carried us inside of them, floating about, safe and secure from care and harm? Is it a remembrance of the times when a parent or (much) older sibling cared for us, carrying us in sleepy haze into the house and laid us gently into a warm bed? Whatever it is, it is soothing and comforting.

There is safety there, in trusting someone and being so close. There is security in the temporary reminder that you are not alone in this world.

Our children have each slept in our bed until they were around two. Now that they are (mostly) in their own beds, I don't think two nights in a row go by that they all wake up in the same beds in which they went to sleep the night before! They like the comfort of not being alone.

I suppose that through this, my hope is that they will remember that comfort from their younger days and seek it out when times are rough later in life. That the comforting presence of family will trump the comfort of other people or substances. That when joy is in their lives, they will look to share that as well, just as I do in my own life, marriage and family.

What brings you comfort? To what do you turn when your world is out of control and life is beating you about the ears?

    1. Thank you, Jacqueline! Isn't that just a soothing place to be? It is a favorite for me, an instant-calm kind of place. My favorite.
